2021 Land Rover Discovery Sport vs. 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC: Practical in Every Sense

The Land Rover Discovery Sport carries on Land Rover traditions while establishing new ones in style. With an outstanding all-wheel drive system, a robust powertrain, and accessible price points, the Discovery Sport makes a strong statement in the segment.

Here, we compare it to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC.

The 2021 Discovery Sport is more accessible

The Discovery Sport and GLC both feature entry models that have a similar price point. However, pricing with subsequent models couldn't be more different. Three additional Discovery Sport trims have an MSRP range between $50,800 and $56,900, which is outstanding for the capability and equipment profile of each grade. However, if you want to access the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC lineup, be ready to start at $65,500 for the GLC 43 and $94,900 for the GLC 63.

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport focuses on better value

The Discovery Sport series features a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 249 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, which is practically all you need for reliable power, admirable response, and all-wheel drive performance throughout Canada. The 11.5 L/100 km combined fuel economy is a peace of mind at the pump and for the environment.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 also includes a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with nearly identical horsepower and torque numbers to the Discovery Sport. Although the AMG GLC models vastly increase horsepower, the entry price point starts at over $15,000 more than the initial MSRP of the Discovery Sport.

One of the strengths of the Discovery Sport is versatility. It comes from a long line of SUVs built to take on extremes, so it carries over sensible SUV DNA. The Discovery Sport features more cargo volume than the GLC, including available volume behind the front and rear seats. The tighter confines of the GLC may limit some activities, especially with reduced capacity. The Discovery Sport also has more rear seat legroom and more headroom than its competitor, a nod to Land Rover's traditionally better space optimization.

The Discovery Sport also offers a key element that all large families will love. The 5+2 seating arrangement lets you accommodate more passengers, without having to upgrade to a bigger luxury SUV. The Mercedes-Benz GLC only has a 5-seat configuration.
